This course will focus on the development of Freud’s thought from 1883 to 1914. It is an overview starting with the birth of psychoanalysis, and ending with Freud’s reformulation of the topographic model. The main topics covered will include the unconscious, instincts, screen memories, dreams and infantile sexuality. In addition, a number of his technique papers as well as Freud’s paper on narcissism will be examined. The course will conclude reading one of Freud’s most interesting cases.
